Do you speak Klingon?
Or do you want to?
If so, this is the book for you. Apparently some people actually do speak this nonsense. At least they do on The Big Bang Theory.

So, here you are:
The Klingon Dictionary: English/Klingon and Klingon/English (Star Trek, The Official Guide to Klingon Words and Phrases), by Marc Okrand (PB, 1985, $5, has a weak binding, and yellowed pages) Look for it on the new non-fiction table (L. sci. fi. )

(I just looked this book up on Amazon. It is amazingly rare. There is a more recent edition still in print. It is even available in e-book format. There are also entire books entirely in Klingon! Amazing, aint it.)

To Live Again (Rehab in 1944)

And Now to Live Again, by Betsy Barton (small HC, 1944, $2.50)

Betsy Barton writes of her own experiences after being paralyzed in a car crash. She writes what it was like immediately after the accident, during her stay at the "Institute", and after her re-entry into life.

She writes during WWII, when soldiers were returning home not only with physical injuries, but also with mental ones. Sadly soldiers and accident victims were not the only ones at the institute. There were also children recovering from neurological conditions like polio. They all go to the gymnasium to work with "teachers", to strengthen muscles and learn new vocations.

This book is not only for the wounded. Barton also writes for the families and friends of the injured. She warns people to expect anger and depression. Then she shares what helped her deal with her losses.

What makes this book even more special is the inscription, "This book is for Bea, and so am I-  Donnie" You are left wondering who was Bea, and how she made out. We will, of course, never know. Neither will we know how life turned out for the others injured by war, accident, illness, or birth. Is it any different today? I would hope so, but I wouldn't bet on it. So hug your family, and your friends, and remember to reach out to those, like Betsy and Bea, who have to learn to live again. (Don, I haven't forgotten you.)

Look for this sobering, but triumphant book on the new non-fiction table. (L. med.)

The Jesus Family Tomb: The Discovery, the Investigation, and the Evidence That Could Change History, by Simcha Jacobovici (TPB, 2007, $2.25)

Ok, I usually consider myself as having an open mind, so I read this with curiosity, if some scepticism. I was not convinced. First off, James Cameron wrote the introduction. That's right, the director of Titanic introduces us to a new archaeological find. Does anyone else but me think it is strange a Hollywood personality was asked to write this introduction? Then there are all those color photos supposedly proving the book's point. Pretty photos, but to me they don't prove anything. Where the book really lost me was when they claim only Jesus' family had the same names as the ones inscribed in the tomb, or that a circle is a crown of thorns, or that a funny looking "X" was a symbol for Christ.

So why buy this book? How about because it is fun poking holes in their interpretations. Look for it on the new non-fiction table.  (L- rel)

Jim Thompson, hero of Thailand's silk industry

Jim Thompson: The Legendary American of Thailand, by William Warren (TPB, 1970, $2)

One year in high school I read The Ugly American. It was the first time I had ever considered that Americans could be greedy, selfish, arrogant, or stupid. Well, I was pretty naive back then.

Jim Thompson is an example of the best America can offer. He was from wealth, graduated from Princeton, and then designed homes for the rich. During WWII the OSS sent him to Thailand. After the war he returned to the private sector but stayed in Thailand. He was amazed by the indigenous woven silk, but the industry was dying. Local vegetable dyes were unpredictable and often faded with use. Silk, in general, was seen as either too old fashioned, or too expensive. Few people in Thailand wanted it. Enter our Mr. Thompson, who was fascinated by everything Thai: their people, architecture, art, and textiles.

He started his silk company in the 1950s. He insisted his weavers use color-fast dyes, and that the silk fibers be of the best quality. He had a spectacular eye for color, and an amazing ability to combine colors and patterns, so his fabrics were different from anything anyone had ever seen before, even in Japan.

Thompson believed strongly in helping the Thai people. First he insisted his weavers work out of their own homes and not in factories, so they could maintain their culture. He also insisted that 51% of his silk company's owners be Thai citizens. He made sure profits went to his workers and the people of Thailand. His board of directors kept trying to raise his salary, and he kept saying he made enough.

He was lucky. Rogers and Hammerstein's The King and I dressed its performers in Thompson's silk. Now everyone wanted it. Queen Elizabeth redecorated a room in Windsor Castle with it. Movie stars wore it, both when they were filming, and when they were not. Other companies tried to compete, but Thompson's silk was always the best.

Eventually he wanted a place to display the art he had collected over the years. He designed a "museum" he could also live in. He moved 6 antique Thai dwellings onto his property, and connected them. Then he started to entertain. Anyone who was anyone could be found there, as well as a lot of just regular people that Thompson thought interesting.

Tragedy struck in 1967. He went for an "evening stroll" in the jungle and never returned. Was it murder? Did he stage his own disappearance? Had he been injured, or gotten lost? Everyone looked for him. Nobody found him.

Reading about Thompson's disappearance is fascinating, but this book drags it out for too long, and keeps coming back to it, again and again. Otherwise, I really liked this book, and this man. Now he would have been someone to meet!

According to the internet, some bones were found in 2007 that might be his, but tests to determine if they were have not been done. Apparently the bones "are in a safe place", whatever that means.

Danielle Steel? Does an "e" really make that much difference?

I found this book in with a bunch of religious books, but why was a Danielle Steel book doing among religious books? Then I saw the author had a Doctor of Divinity, and that the book's preface read, "Another book on the higher Christian life!" At that point I realized something was wrong. Whoever Daniel Steele was, he wasn't Danielle Steel. Though with a title like, "Love Enthroned", how was I to know?

Those of you who know me realize this is not me.  Rather , it is my lovely neighbor who agreed to model the t-shirts for our website.

I had Madeline put all the names in a bowl and pull out a winner.  And the winner is...Kerri!  Please e-mail me your shirt selection (grey or white) and your size along with your address and I'll get the shirt out in the mail this week.

Peter was baptized this weekend and I have some lovely photos to post, but other duties are calling me now.  I used to get my blogging done in the evenings when the children were in bed.  However, that is Peter's fussy time and I just don't have the heart to let him cry.

God Bless!

Peter's Baptism

This past weekend, we celebrated as the Church welcomed Peter Francis into the fold!  The ceremony was held after Mass with our family, Grandma Pam, and the Godparents with their children.

Peter was NOT happy.  He had his mind set on nursing and wanted nothing to do with this whole Baptism thing.  He cried and cried!

Father Larry holding newly baptized Peter Francis.

Peter with his Godparents.

Our first family photo with Peter!

Peter's lovely Godmother made these adorable cookies.  Esther could not wait to get her hands on them!

Here is a better look at the cookies after I took the wrapping off.

Going, going, gone!  They were as delicious as they were cute!  If you're in need of cookies for a special occasion, consider contacting Grace.  She really does excellent work!

And as if cookies weren't enough to celebrate, we had a scrumptious cake from the local grocery store....yum!

Peter is happy to wear his new sweater from his Godmother.
There were, of course, many more photos.  Grandma took some fabulous pictures of Peter in his baptismal gown...and I forgot to get them off of her camera before she left for home...ugh!  The gown is an heirloom which Todd wore at his baptism and all of our children have been baptized in it as well.  They each have their own bonnet as a keepsake of their first sacramental celebration.

I hope that your Lent is going well and you are preparing to enter into Holy Week.  We haven't kept all of our resolutions and have had to let many things slip.  We had some fabulous plans laid out.  Of course, those were all made pre-Peter.  So, for now, I am offering up many sleepless nights...such is life with a newborn.  We all do what we can, right?

God Bless!

It's less than a month away!  The Minnesota Catholic Home Education Conference and Curriculum Fair is coming up on June 1-2. This is an event that I look forward to all year long.  Todd and I secured childcare for the oldest 6 children (no easy task!) and will bring little Peter along for the ride.

I am particularly excited to attend the high school and beyond workshop during the day on Friday.  With Madeline entering 7th grade in the fall, the reality of high school, transcripts, PSEO, and a whole bunch of other stuff is starting to stress me out.  Todd has graciously agreed to be there with me so that we can hear the same information as we tend to process things differently.

The keynote speaker is Marcel LeJeune.  I've heard him on Relevant Radio a couple of times and think that he'll do an awesome job. They always do a great job bringing in quality speakers.  The past two years featured Andrew Pudewa and Ray Guarendi. They were absolutely amazing and hilarious which is a winning combination if you ask me!

Now I need to sit down and get my "lists" together.  It is so nice to have all the vendors in one location where I can actually talk to them and pick their brains with questions I have about curriculum and different learning styles of my children.  The hardest part for me is keeping to my list of things that I need and holding back on the impulse buys...there are so many fun things that I would like to add to our school!

The best part is seeing all of the other families who are doing what we do.  No matter how secure I feel in our decision to home school, there are days when I feel alone and isolated.  Home schooling is definitely more mainstream than it was 20 years ago, but it is not the "normal" thing to do.  In my neighborhood of over 300 homes, there is only one other family I know of who teaches their children at home.  It's hard to put into words the feeling I get being surrounded by hundreds of people who are walking the same road as we are.

How about you?  Do you have a home school conference in your area that you attend?  If you live in Minnesota, do you plan on attending this year?  I'd love to see you there!

God Bless!

Sickness, Baby Love, and New 'Dos

The past few weeks have flown by in a blur of sickness.  We've had ear infections, sinus infections, walking pneumonia, bronchitis, high fevers, body aches, coughing, sneezing, and just all around misery.  It came to a head last Sunday when the fevers sky-rocketed in three of the children.  We took all last week off from school and just focused on getting better.  Of course, there were two dance rehearsals and recitals late in the week that couldn't be missed...but other than that we laid low.  So, many doctor visits and a few prescriptions later, we're back at it this week!  It feels good to be back in our routine.

Little Peter is 3 months old already!  He is cooing and smiling up a storm.  He is beginning to sleep better at night and will usually have 5-6 hours of sleep before waking to nurse.  He has outgrown his first set of clothes and has moved into size 2 diapers....I wish babies didn't grow so fast!  Needless to say, we are all smitten with our littlest man!

I couldn't get him to take his eyes off of the ceiling fan!
After their dance recitals, Madeline and Lillian both decided to cut off their hair and donate it to Locks of Love.  My girls are so laid back about their hair.  We pulled it back into a low ponytail and braided it.  Then I got out the scissors and chopped it off.  They are both quite happy with their new 'dos and I think they both look adorable. Perhaps I am a bit biased!

Lillian before....

and after!

Madeline before...

and after!

I'm hoping to get back into routine here and do a better job of posting more regularly.  I spend a lot of time sitting and nursing the baby, so I have many thoughts going through my head.  Now if I can just get some time to type them out...I'm sure you can't wait!

God Bless!

14 Years of Wedded Bliss

July 18, 1998
Todd and I celebrated 14 years of marriage yesterday.  I honestly cannot believe how quickly that many years can fly by!  I remember being 14 years old (which doesn't seem all that long ago) and now I've been married that long!  It's funny how I still picture myself looking the way I do in that photograph above.  And then I take a closer look and realize that there are wrinkles, grey hairs, and a few extra pounds of padding in various places on my body.  Do you ever catch yourself visualizing a younger you?

We have grown so much over these past 14 years.  We mentor engaged couples through our church and have ample opportunity to reflect on where we started out, assess where we currently are, and visualize where we want to be.  Through God's grace, we'll get there together!

And of course there are the children...all 7 of them!  Todd asked me yesterday if I ever imagined we'd have 7 children in 14 years.  We both wanted a large family, but didn't really know what large meant.  I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to raise these children to give glory and honor to God.  I am truly enjoying the people that they are becoming.  It is fun to watch their personalities emerge and see their talents develop.  I am excited to see what the future holds for each of them.

It is good to take a step back occasionally and count my blessings.  Living in the trenches of mothering many, I sometimes feel overwhelmed and focus only on what I didn't get done or did poorly.  I must remember to let go and let God work His graces through me. Today is one of those days.  I feel so tremendously blessed to be living my life with my best friend and all of our children.  I pray that God will bless us with many more years together and eternity in Heaven.

God Bless!

Getting Back Pain Relief When You Are Pregnant

To contact us Click HERE
More than half of pregnant women would be interested in ways to quickly relieve the pain in their back. Even those who have never suffered from back pain before can suddenly find the pain seemingly unbearable as the body suddenly changes shape and additional stresses are added to the back.

For pregnant women who have a history of back pain, things can be even more grim. Increased incidences of urinary tract infections can also contribute to the pain. On top of all of this, rapidly changing hormones can leave a woman unable to cope with the onset of persistent back pain. No one should look down on a pregnant woman who is seeking quick relief for such pain.

Unfortunately, back pain caused by pregnancy is no excuse for women to indiscriminately pop some pills in their mouth to make the pain go away. Not only are there additional risks involved in taking medications during pregnancy, but taking pain killers has many known and unknown consequences for the unborn baby.

The best medication for relieving back pain during pregnancy is prevention. A professionally directed exercise program before pregnancy can help prepare your body for the rigors of pregnancy. However, if you are already pregnant and experiencing pain in your back, taking short walks may help alleviate some of the pain quickly.

The main thing you need to do is talk about your back pain with your doctor. Find out if it is possible for you to take medications without putting your baby at risk. Better yet, ask your doctor for safer, natural ways to relieve your pain, such as exercises you can do safely.

Your doctor will most likely tell you to avoid wearing tight clothing and high heels, as well as avoid sitting on chairs that promote bad posture. In fact, anything you can do to improve your posture in spite of your now ever-changing center of balance is probably going to help you to get relief. Talk to your doctor about your options right away.

If you suffer from lower back pain, there is relief. Visit BackPainCures.org for more information.

Pregnancy Heartburn Relief - Tips for Expectant Mothers

To contact us Click HERE
Pregnancy is an exciting yet challenging phase for the mom-to-be. Your body grows and changes during the course of your childbearing. All these changes are meant to perfectly and properly accommodate the new life inside you. However, there are other difficulties that pregnant women face when it comes to their health. They are more fragile and at risk for developing diseases which include gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. Pregnant women are very prone to conditions such as nausea, vomiting, and heartburn. As a matter of fact, majority of pregnant women experience heartburn because of several reasons. Because of that, it is very important that you arm yourself with some pregnancy heartburn relief tips and help you get through the nine months with ease.

Why Women Are At Risk for Heartburn?

As mentioned previously, expectant moms-to-be are more at risk to suffer from heartburn. While a majority of people experience it, they do not have heartburn episodes as frequently as pregnant moms. Below are some of the main reasons why women need to look for effective pregnancy heartburn relief methods:

1. Increased hormones - Hormones are very important in the body. They are responsible for several functions. Without them, complications are at all-time high. Pregnant women will usually have an imbalance in their hormonal levels. This makes them weepy and moody all the time. Aside from that, this imbalance usually softens the ligaments in your lower esophageal sphincter and can lead to stomach acid reflux.

2. Pressure in the stomach - As your body and baby grows, the contents of your stomach is usually pushed into your esophagus. This can also cause several heartburn episodes.

Remedies for Heartburn during Pregnancy

Nowadays, there are a lot of medicines that can help you deal with heartburn. However, pregnant women are usually discouraged by physicians to take in over-the-counter drugs because they can pose harm to their unborn child.

If you are looking for pregnancy heartburn relief options that are safe to do, here are some:

1. Stay away from food items that are already known to be heartburn triggers. Citrus fruits and juices, vinegar, spicy food items, and even chocolate are considered as heartburn triggers.

2. A good pregnancy heartburn relief is to say "no" to caffeine. If you are fond of drinking caffeine-rich drinks like coffee or tea, try to stay away from them during the course of your pregnancy. These drinks increase the possibility of acid reflux in your stomach. Same goes with alcohol-based beverages.

3. Eat in moderation. While it is a given fact that you are eating for two, eating several small meals in a day is better than stuffing yourself with food.

Heartburn during pregnancy is a very common problem. By following the above mentioned pregnancy heartburn relief tips, you will be able to get through your childbearing well. Stay safe for you and your unborn child.

If you are pregnant and you always experience heartburn, it is necessary to use only a pregnancy heartburn relief. Go to http://www.severeheartburnrelief.com and know the different heartburn remedies.

The Effects of Diabetes on Pregnancy

To contact us Click HERE
Diabetes is present in 2-6% of pregnant women in the United States.

88% of the women have gestational diabetes (GDM). This is a form of diabetes which appears during pregnancy, typically during the second or third trimester.

The prevalence of GDM has increased due to the increased incidence of obesity in the US. It is now seen in 5-7% of all pregnancies.

It is diagnosed by a 75 gram oral glucose tolerance test between 24-32 weeks of pregnancy.

Risk factors for GDM include prior history of GDM, a family history of DM, obesity and increased age.

The remaining 12% of pregnant women with diabetes have pre-existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

In all women who become pregnant, increased production of hormones by the placenta, such as human placental lactogen, causes resistance to insulin's action.

Normal women are able to overcome this by increased production of insulin. Their sugars are thus maintained in the normal range.

Women with GDM, as well as pre-existing type 1 DM and type 2 DM, are unable to compensate for pregnancy associated insulin resistance.

In type 1 DM, this is due to absence of insulin production.

In GDM and type 2 DM this is due to pre-pregancy insulin resistance. Many of these women may also have defects in insulin production.

Their inability to compensate for pregnancy related insulin resistance results in blood sugar elevation.

If sugars are increased in women with pre-existing diabetes during the first weeks of pregnancy, there is an increased risk of spontaneous abortions and birth defects.

These risks may be increased 3-6 fold in women with average blood sugar values greater than 200 mg/dl.

If sugars remain elevated throughout their pregnancy, there is an increased risk of large babies and delivery associated injuries. There may also be an increased lifetime risk for obesity and/or diabetes in the child.

Elevated sugars are also associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure and preeclampsia.

High sugar levels in women with GDM are associated with similar risks.

Given the known association of high blood sugar with complications in the newborn and mother, good sugar control is important.

Among women with pre-existing diabetes, every effort should be made to normalize blood sugar before conception.

HA1c levels (a blood test which gives the 2-3 month average blood sugar) should be as close to normal as possible.

Fasting sugars should be in the 70-100 mg/dl range. 1 hour after meal sugars should be <140 mg/dl.

Consultation with a dietitian, endocrinologist, and high risk obstetrician is often recommended.

Once pregnant, typical goals are morning fasting sugars of 70-90 mg/dl and 1 hour after meal sugars <120 mg/dl.

Middle of the night (3-4 AM) and bedtime testing may also be recommended.

70-80% of women with GDM will be able to achieve these goals with changes in their diet and light exercise.

Consultation with a dietician is important.

Typical dietary recommendations include 3 meals per day with a high fiber, low saturated fat, low sweet intake. Snacks are included as needed. Carbohydrate intake should be monitored and reviewed with a dietician as needed.

Light exercise may help reduce insulin resistance, but should only be started after consultation with your medical team. Weight lifting should be avoided.

If sugar goals are not achieved with lifestyle changes, medical therapy is initiated.

In women with pre-existing diabetes, insulin is the most common therapy.

Among women with GDM, treatment with oral diabetes agents such as Glyburide is another option.

Many endocrinologists (myself included) prefer insulin therapy due to lack of long-term safety data, as well as less dosing flexibility, with the oral agents.

Since the degree of resistance to insulin increases as the pregnancy progresses, increasing doses of medications are typically required through the third trimester.

Blood sugars typically return to pre-pregnancy values after delivery.

Sugar control may be erratic in women with type 1 diabetes after delivery.

If nursing is planned, medication regimens should be reviewed with an obstetrician.

Nursing may be recommended given its known health benefits, as well as several reports which suggested a lower incidence of type 1 diabetes in children who were breast fed.

Women with GDM are at a significantly increased risk (up to 50% in some studies) for developing diabetes in the future.

A glucose tolerance test is typically performed 6 weeks after delivery in women with GDM.

Even if the test is normal, efforts should be made to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight.

If sugar levels are managed carefully in pregnant women with diabetes, the chances for a healthy pregnancy and healthy child are similar to those reported in non-diabetic women.

Future advances in management, as well as earlier diagnosis, should continue to improve the outlook for women with pregnancy and diabetes.

Bringing Out Your Company's Soul At a Trade Show

To contact us Click HERE
Have you ever been bedazzled by a theatrical trailer only to find out it completely misrepresented what the movie was about? False expectations can ruin a great movie. The same is true about what your trade show display tells visitors. If your trade show booth design doesn't embody the soul of your business, you're not doing your product justice.
So here are a few tips to help you imbue your custom trade show displays with the essence of your business.
Be true to yourself. You may have the most versatile vegetable peeler in the world, but fight the urge to try to be all things to all people. Focus your collateral material, your demos, and your talking points on what you do better than anyone. You'll be surprised how many people are willing to change their demand around a well presented product with a clear purpose. In fact, people love learning about novel ways to solve familiar problems, which leads us to our next tip.
Show off something fresh and unique. No one peruses custom trade show displays looking for the coolest thing from last year. Your brand is a living thing and people want to see life and progression. This doesn't mean you have to sit out the trade show just because you haven't invented a new product in awhile. Repackage what you have. Show what else is so unique about it. Make a minor design change. Little Giant Ladders revitalized sales for their ladder systems by adding a couple little wheels to move their ladder more easily. You can reinvent your product in the visitor's mind while maintaining your brands identity.
Sell a lifestyle, not just a product. This can be a challenge for a 10' by 6' trade show booth design. But why is there such a big market for high powered blenders right now? Not because the concept of a blender is new. It's because people love the idea of getting their nasty healthy leafy vegetables hidden in a delicious fruit smoothie. This idea is revolutionary. You're not selling a blender, you're pouring a refreshing 3-minute fitness smoothie down your customer's throat -- literally. Live demos are Blendtec's bread and butter. The best way to tell about the greatness of your product is to show it in action. Your customers will identify your brand with how it changes their lives, not just your product. So make sure your booth staff has the pitch or demo down well enough that your product can sell itself.

Women's Health And Dizziness During Pregnancy

To contact us Click HERE
A notable number of women experience dizziness during pregnancy. The scientific explanation for this is that, during that period, the body of a woman's body undergoes a lot of cardiovascular changes. The body is supposed to undergo self-initiating adaptive changes in its cardiovascular and nervous systems to enable normal functioning, especially in maintaining continuous supply of blood to the brain. The consequences of failure of such adaptive mechanisms include fainting and giddiness.

One of the significant changes that occur to women during gestation is an increase in the rate of heart beat. This is accompanied by increment in blood volumes by about 45%. They also undergo dilation of blood vessels, resulting in low blood pressure. A woman experiences the lowest blood pressure levels at around mid-pregnancy. This drop is only restored to normal close to the end of gestation period.

Medical experts have identified a number of ways that can help in handling dizziness. It is critical that a woman lies down if she experiences vertigo. This prevents her from suffering injury by falling. She should also stop doing any activity that may bring harm to her or others, for instance operating machinery or driving.

The basic cause of dizziness and fainting is an inadequate supply of blood to the brain. First aid measures, hence, should aim to restore this supply. One way of achieving this is by resting the victim in a horizontal position, but with the head slightly lower than the rest of the body. Where there is no space to lie, it is advisable that the victim sits, then put her head between her knees. The woman may also lie on her left side, since this increases blood flow to both the heart and the brain.

A woman's actions may increase the risk of her fainting or experiencing lightheadedness. Top on this list is a quick shift in position from either lying or sitting to standing. Blood pools around the feet and in lower legs during resting periods. The body may not be able to restore blood flow to the heart and brain upon springing from the rest position, hence resulting in dizziness. Therefore, it is advisable for pregnant women not to spring from resting positions to standing.

Blood may also pool around the feet when a person stands at the same position for prolonged periods. Expectant women are advisable to walk around after short periods of being stationary. In case this is not possible, exercising legs could also help improve blood circulation. Wearing support stockings has also been proven to improve circulation.

Pregnant woman should take note of their sleeping positions since how they sleep may increase chances of experiencing lightheadedness. A woman should not lie on their stomachs or backs during their second and third trimesters. This is because such positions cause the uterus to exert extra pressure on inferior vena cava, slowing circulation in the lower abdomen. They should lie of their left side instead.

Vasovagal syncope may also result in dizziness during pregnancy. This is a condition resulting from straining during activities such as urination or coughing, dehydration, pain or anxiety. Symptoms associated with this condition are a feeling of warmth, nausea, yawning, sweating and paleness. It is advisable to lie or sit upon experiencing such symptoms.

The New Guy

To contact us Click HERE
Our new guy seems to be fitting in just fine.  He is so laid back and really only cries when he's hungry, needs a diaper changed, or feels neglected.  There is so much noise and a general sense of chaos in the house that he seems to get nervous when it is too quiet.  He is adored by his siblings and puts up with an amazing amount of poking and prodding from various little fingers all day long.

He's started rolling over from his back onto his tummy which is literally met with applause from his brother and sisters.  He is grabbing and reaching for things and absolutely everything goes into his mouth. He's babbling up a storm and every now and again screams just to mix it up a bit.

Night time is still challenging.  He's a hungry little guy and likes to eat every 2-4 hours...or more.  I am blessed to have the perspective that this stage will not last forever and actually enjoy that time with him in the middle of the night when it is just the two of us.

His onesie reads "I'm the new guy" - too cute to pass up on a trip to Target.

He's hamming it up for his sister who was making funny faces at him.  I love that gummy smile!
Of course I think he's the best, most beautiful baby ever.  But I've said that 6 times before.  This time of babyhood is so fleeting.  I just hope that I'm taking enough pictures and stopping to take it all in so that I don't forget any of it.  Thank God for the gift of life - babies are such a blessing!

God Bless!

Dropping the Ball

To contact us Click HERE
I realize that I have totally dropped the ball on this blog lately.  I have a dozen or so REALLY interesting blog posts formulated in my mind...at least they seem fabulous at 2 am when I am up with Peter.  Then I'll sit down and blankly stare at the computer screen the next day struggling to put together a coherent sentence.

Peter seems to be regressing rather than progressing in the area of sleep.  He's been up every 2-3 hours each night to nurse and then staying up for an hour or two in the early morning hours.  He also hasn't pooped in a week.  He's passing plenty of gas, so I'm sure that the system is working as it should.  I checked in with our pediatrician about it today and she reassured me that he's probably just getting so much nutrition out of the breast milk that there isn't much waste left to pass through to his diaper.  I've got him started back on some probiotics to help out his tummy.  Hopefully there will be some pooping soon as I think that he does have a bit of a tummy ache.

So what have I been up to during the daylight hours?  The children finished up all of their projects to enter into the county fair and we dropped them off tonight.  As a homeschooling family, it is nice to have a place to display their work and it is great incentive to complete any "almost finished" projects!  I'll let you know how it goes in the judging later on in the week.

VBS started today and it is awesome!  This year's theme is the Luminous Mysteries.  Each day is devoted to learning about one mystery...how cool is that?!?  The down side is that it is at the church that's 50 miles away, so it is a trek to get there.  And when mommy isn't sleeping much it makes the drive feel that much longer!

We had a super successful winter with our crafting business which means we need to replenish our supplies before the fall craft show season is upon us.  Todd and I have been plugging away each evening and are slowly getting our storage bins filled again.

And did I mention that we re-listed our house?  Yes, we're trying this one more time.  The market has picked up a bit and houses in our neighborhood are selling.  We're praying that it sells and for the graces we need to get through the added stress of having our home on the market, showings, open houses, etc.

Oh my...there's Peter again.  Sorry for the lack of any creativity on this post - just sending out a quick update.

God Bless!

Heather :-)

7 Quick Takes - Birthday Bash!

To contact us Click HERE
On Wednesday our family celebrated our 5th annual birthday bash with 130 of our friends and family.  Instead of having 7 separate parties for the children, we combine them into one mega-party and go all out.  Using the 7 Quick Takes format, here is a peek at this year's celebration.

(1) T-shirtsWe buy shirts on sale ($2.50 each) and Todd makes an iron on for the front (5th Annual Kraft Birthday Bash) and the back (child's name and birthday) so that the birthday kids are easy to pick out in a crowd.
Here's the front of this year's shirt...
and the back!

(2) Carnival GamesWe have a carnival set up in our backyard and the neighbors graciously let us spill over into their yard as well.  Throughout the year we pick up prizes as they go on clearance (Target dollar aisle when it's 70% off if a favorite place to look!) to keep the budget down in that area.  Each child gets a bag with 30 tickets inside that they can use at any of the carnival games. The fishing game is always a huge hit!

Here's Haley and Eleanor getting the sucker pull ready - another crowd pleaser!

(3) FoodThis is kept really simple and requires no cutlery.  I have sloppy joes or hot dogs along with carrot sticks, watermelon, and chips.  I also have two big drink containers - one filled with water and the other filled with lemonade.

We have the food set up in the garage.  There are a few tables and chairs, but folks take their food and sit on the lawn or in chairs they bring along to watch the magic show.

(4) CakeI order two full sheet cakes from Sam's Club for $37 a piece.  This is a super tasty cake and is the best price I can find anywhere.

Esther really wanted to stick her finger into that big frosting balloon!

(5) Strolling Magic This is the second year we had Magician Matt Dunn attend the party.  He did some strolling magic during the carnival which was a hit again.  More than one mom came up to me and said, "Your magician stole my watch!"  The kids loved being able to be up close and personal with a "real, live magician".  It was pretty spendy, but a favorite and memorable addition to the party.

(6) Magic ShowMagician Matt Dunn did a magic show after supper.  He has a very dry sense of humor and had us all laughing out loud.  He did an excellent job utilizing volunteers from the audience and including our children into his show.

Here's the guests all finding a spot to watch the magic show.
They loved being part of the show!
(7) Food Shelf DonationsEach year we ask that our guests bring a donation for the food shelf instead of a gift for our family.  This year we collected  606 pounds of food!  Over the past 5 years of birthday bashes our friends and family have blessed the local food shelf with 2,400 pounds of food!  Isn't that amazing?!?  It is such a wonderful thing to have the children bring the donations to the food shelf and know that their celebration is helping other families in need.

That's what 606 pounds of food looks like in the back of Big Blue!
Waiting for the staff to add up the total pounds of our donation.
And of course I need to mention all the generous souls who volunteer to help us with this wonderful event.  We couldn't do it without all of them.  We thoroughly enjoy this celebration and look forward to it all year long.  Eleanor asked me today, "Mommy, how many more days until the next Birthday Bash?"  I'm sure that isn't the only time I'll have to answer that question!

God Bless!

How we celebrate birthdays

To contact us Click HERE
I recently posted about our 5th Annual Birthday Bash.  It is a celebration that we have each year to combine all of our birthdays into one humongous shin-dig. It is something that our family anticipates all year long.  It is an amazing event, but there is one question we get asked over and over again.  "What about their individual birthdays?  Don't they get to celebrate their day?"  The answer is, "Of course they do!"

Today was Lillian's 7th birthday.  Here is a peek at what a birthday celebration in the Kraft house looks like.

When the birthday kid wakes up, there is a sign over her door.  I don't know where I stole this idea from, but it has really caught on in our house.  They love having this silly sign on their door.  I let it stay up for a whole week, so it kind of prolongs the celebration.

All the children love running through the birthday door!

Of course I forgot to take a photo, but we started the morning off with monkey bread.  The birthday girl eats all of her meals on the "You are special" plate all day long.

After breakfast, we had family prayer time where we said a rosary.  This is special because the only intention was for the birthday girl - that she grow in holiness and learn to love and serve the Lord more in this upcoming year.

Present time comes next in our day.  The birthday child receives as many presents as they are old that year.  There is usually one present that is a little more "spendy" than the others.  We did, however, cap this at ten. So our 12 year old only got ten presents this year (she was totally okay with that!).   One of their presents is in the birthday box.  This is a special present that Dad chooses special for the birthday child.  The birthday box is the last present opened...maybe I'll have to post more about that later.  It's a neat thing.

She's been asking for this silly thing for over a year.  She was SUPER excited to get it...they tried 3 different slushies this afternoon!
The children always give each other gifts as well.  They know each other really well and get creative about finding gifts.  Sometimes it is something homemade.  Other times, they pool some money to buy something.  Joseph earned a free book from the library reading program.  There weren't any books that he was interested in for himself, but there were many that Lillian would enjoy.  So he got her a book and gave it to her for her birthday.

We simplified the cake baking process a few years back.  I make a jumbo sized chocolate chip cookie and the birthday child gets to decorate it.

That's a smiley face, 7, and balloon made out of chocolate chips...and a whole lot of sprinkles!

And it wouldn't be a complete birthday without candles and singing.

Looks like Eleanor and Haley are trying to give her a little help!

The birthday child also chooses what we have for meals and has the spotlight on them for the day.  They also receive cards in the mail from relatives and phone calls from grandparents. Who doesn't love getting mail and phone calls?!

That's what a Kraft kid birthday celebration looks like.

God Bless!

7 Months!

Little Peter Francis is not so little anymore.  He just passed the 7 month mark this weekend.  This last month he has begun to do so many things.  He started eating "solids" and for the most part is liking it.  He's eating from a spoon twice a day and still nursing whenever he wants.

He's all smiles until I have to clean his face!
He is soooooo close to sitting on his own.  He's proficient in rolling and pushing himself up to check out his surroundings.  I wouldn't call his method of mobility "crawling", but he definitely gets around.  Todd said that it kind of looks like an injured soldier trying to get off the battle field, and I think that creates a pretty accurate picture!  It's not pretty, but it gets him where he wants to go!

He has really discovered his voice the past few weeks, which makes it interesting during daily Mass!  I struggle with sitting there and letting him babble during the consecration versus leaving.  Because when I leave the 2 and 4 year old noisily follow me and the rest of the kids get unruly...what to do, what to do?

And most of all, he's really begun to interact with his siblings.  The all adore him and argue constantly about who's turn it is to watch Peter.  Esther is even beginning to learn "gentle" and give him hugs and kisses before she pokes his eyes and tries to touch his soft spot...hey, it's progress!  She's pretty rough around the edges!

Esther got him that chew toy and then gave him a kiss.  She's learning to be a good big sister!
Life is so good.  I am unbelievably blessed with the opportunity to raise these children and pray for the graces I need to help us all grow closer to the Lord each day.

God Bless!

Heather :-)

Minor Site: http://www.pregnancycare-center.org/stagesofdevelopment.htm

This site is a good minor site for the fetal development topic because it just gives us a brief overview of some of the major stages in the developing fetus. It explains it to us in simple terms and also gives us some great graphics to go along with each stage it is describing.
This site is from the South Central Pregnancy Center. It is a nonprofit organization that offers support and assistance to anyone going through a pregnancy. They give free pregnancy tests and offer any kind of assiatnce for mothers to be from information about abortion and even adoption. They even refer you to other medical care. They just offer any basic type of information on pregancy and thats also what there site is for.
At day 1the sperm joins with the egg and becomes fertilized to form one cell which now inherits 23 chromosomes from each parent and has its genetic blue print. It starts forming the brain and spinal cord. At day 21 its heart begins to beat and by day 28 its begun to form arms and legs. At 1 month the embryo is now 10,000 times bigger than the beginning cell. By day 35 and 40 you can see the baby’s fingers formed and you can now detect and record brain activity. By weeks 7and 8 the baby begins to move spontaneously and the fetus now has everything that you will find in an adult structurally.
Now at week 10the uterus is doubled in size and things like baby’s fingerprints are now evident in the mothers skin. The fetus now does things like swallow and sleep and awaken. And it even open and closes it mouth now. Another thing that begins to occur is urination of the fetus. By week 14you can now tell whether it will be a male or female baby. You can now see fine hair develop on baby’s head and its said that the baby can now hear any external noises including moms voice. Here the umbilical cord is recorded to bring 300 quarts of fluid to the baby. Here the fetus is about eight to ten inches long
By the fifth monthhalf of the pregnancy is over and the fetus is now up to about 12 inches long. The fetus may move a lot due to external sounds and mother can now feel all of these movements very well. By month seven the baby is using all of its senses: hearing, touch, vision, and taste. By month eight its skin thickens for insulation and nourishment and the baby is almost ready to come out. Finally by nine monthsapproximately 280 days the fetus is ready to be delivered. They are now about 6 to 9 pounds and can survive completely outside the mothers womb.

This site is definetly a great major website. The website is actually information from a psychology book. It has pictures of all the months of a growing fetus. By going to the bottom of the screen there is actually arrows that will take you to other portions of this site. The Developing Fetus page shows you 3 photographs of how a fetus is born. You can find out about miscarriages and how to prevent your fetus from certain abnormalties.

Stages of Prenatal Development

On the first month, fertilization starts which the egg then plants itself in the wall of the uterus. The cells in the egg start to divide rapidly out of control. The nervous system develops and the fetus is only about a 1/2 inch long.
The second month you have the heart and blood vessels forming as well as your limbs, head, and eyes. Your heart starts to beat very faintly and your internal organs start to grow into place.
The third month the head of the fetus becomes bigger and the bones begin to form. The digestive organs start to function. The fetus at this level is 3 inches long and weighs approximately an ounce.
During the fourth month, lower parts of the body show rapid growth, you are able to see the bones in an XRay. Also during this time, you can actually hear the heartbeat. All the organs are completely formed. Fetus is 7 inches long and weighs 5 ounces.
The fifth month is when the mother begins to feel the baby moving within her. Fingernails and toenails begin to appear as well as cartilidge around the ears and nose. The fetus shows hiccups, thumb sucking, and kicking. Fetus is 12 inches long and weight 14 ounces.
The sixth month, the eyes and eyelids are completely formed. You also have the formation of fat under the skin. By this stage the fetus is 14 inches long and weighs 2 pounds.
The seventh month is when the cerebral cortex of the brain develops rapidly. Fetus is 17 inches long and weighs 3 pounds.
The eighth month shows subcutaneous fat which is deposited for later use. Fingernails reach beyond the fingertips. Fetus is 17 inches long and weighs 5 pounds.
The ninth and final month is when the hair covering the entire body sheds, all the organ system function the way they are suppose to, and the fetus gets settled in order to be born. At the end of pregnancy, the baby is approximately 21 inches long and weighs 7 pounds.

FINAL BY WENDY SILVA

Although this wedsite is about the fetal pig, i found it interesting. The graphics are good and the site is set up in three sections. 1. Anatomy, 2. Estrous cycle and 3. Embyonic and Fetal development. This website was designed by Dr. Wayne Singleton and Dr. mark Diekman and is about reproduction, physiology and anatomy of the sow. It is an understanding of the sows reproductive sysytem, and how it is essential for a successful mating program. A program that is held at the purdue university. This site provides beautiful dissections that are fresh and not what we have viewed in lab.
The anatomy part of this website goes on to explain that the ovaries are the main structures of fetal develpoment. They have 2 major function which are to produce hormones and ova. the infundibulum is the membrane around the ovary and the oviduct is the site for fetilization. The cervix is the site where sperm is deposited and the uterine horns are the passage ways for sprem to meet the ovum.
Estrous cycle, Estrus and Ovulation
The estrous cycle in the sow is normally a 21 day cycle. Non pregnant pigs display a estrus or standing heat throughtout the year. While the sow is nursing her young the estrus cycle will not be present. Follicles are formed on each ovary as the estrus approaches. Follicular growth is influenced by hormones from the pituitary gland. Granulosa cells within the follicle secretes estrogen which is responsible for estrus.
Fertilization, Embryonic and Fetal Development
Although 30-60 million sperm are deposited into to cervix, only a small percentage reach the oviduct.sperm can swim on there own so the cervix with its contractions help the sperm on their way. when fertilization happens the blastocysts enter the uterus and can migrate from one horn to another. The embryo is surrouneded by a serious of fluid filled membranes. Fetal orientation is random, meaning the fetus are facing different directions. Embryos which die become reabsored. The average geatation period from conception to birth is 114 days and the fetus is about 3 to 3 1/2 pounds.

I believe this site to be a major site for fetal development. The site is designed by the westside pregnancy resource center. While surfing the web for fetal development I had come across many sites that refer back to this site. This site gives detailed descripiton of the developing embryo to fetus. It also provides colored pictures. For 30 years, this website provides a life-affirming support to both women and men who finds themselves in an unplanned pregnancy or hurting from previous abortion, or in need of sexual/ralational guidance. They are a non-profit, non-political, non-denominational organization funded entirely by privite donations and small grants. It is run solely on a small goup of staff and a handfull of volunteers. This center is the only kind in west Los Angeles and all services are free and confidential. They also provide many free services from home clinics to confidential counseling. Westside also has many links of articles and online resources about sex, pregnancy, adoption, abortion and the developing fetus, which I will disscus in this blog. there is also a hotline for anyone who is in need of counseling.
The first trimester During this stage the the sperm joins the egg in the fallopian tube and becomes fertile. The Once fetilization takes place the blastocyst burrows beneath the surface of the uterus where it will grow into a fetus. By week three the backbone, spinal column and nerous system are developing rapidly. Hormones are produced to stop the expecting mothers menstrul cycle. The heart begins to beat at 5 weeks and by the seventh week facial hair appears as well as muscle system development. The embryo is called a fetus by the end of the 8th week.
The second trimester This trimester is when the fetus muscles begin to develop and the mother can feel the kicking within her womb. Taste buds, eyebrows, and eyelashes are appearing around 15-16 weeks after conception. By 20 weeks the fetus now has fingernail and fingerprints. When having an ultrasound done during this stage one can see the sex organs of the fetus. The mothers voice can be recognized the fetus.
The third trimester In this semester the fetus begins breathing by inhaling the amnionic fluid into the developing lungs. By 38-40 weeks the baby is approximately seven to seven and a hald pounds and is ready for delivery.

What You Should Know About HPV And Pregnancy

To contact us Click HERE
For women who've contracted Human Papillomavirus, the combination of HPV and pregnancy usually results in anxiety. Worries over miscarriages, transferring the virus to the baby, and various other complications are quite typical, However, the good news is, the link between HPV and complications with pregnancy is generally unproven.

HPV and Pregnancy - The Myths

There exists an unproven belief that HPV is correlated with premature births, miscarriages and a host of various other complications with being pregnant. The truth of the matter is, there is no scientific studies to associate the virus with these complications - even during cases when the mother is contaminated with the harmful HPV 16 strain on the virus. When you have HPV, and are either pregnant or would like to be, there isn't any reason to worry about these issues springing up from your infection.

What You Need To Know About HPV and Pregnancy

HPV Transmissions to the Infant

Although unusual, we have seen documented instances of women with HPV passing the virus on to their babies during childbirth. In the most of these extremely rare cases, the baby's immune system clears the virus on its own and presents no health hazards. In some instances, however, it's possible to the infant to become contaminated with the virus in his or her throat - bringing about a probably-critical condition referred to as respiratory papillomatosis.

If the child has respiratory papillomatosis, laser surgery is necessary to take away the resulting warts which develop in the throat before they could lead to difficulties with breathing. In order to avoid subjecting the infant to this particular risk, some doctors advocate caesarean births for females with HPV.

Problems with Genital Warts

Genital warts as well as other symptoms of HPV in women tend to increase more quickly during pregnancy. Such happening is the results of heightened hormonal activity and, in certain women can lead to problems which need the physician to take out the warts prior to giving birth. For example, there has been cases where genital warts have multiplied so quickly, and grown so large, they have partly blocked the mother's birth canal.

As with other issues linked to HPV and pregnancy, problems with excessive wart growth are quite rare and definitely will even clear themselves without treatment in most cases. Because of this, most doctors would prefer to wait as long as possible to see if the infection clears by itself.

Coping With HPV While Pregnant

Apart from problems that may potentially affect your unborn baby, living with HPV while pregnant will show some extra challenges to the pregnant woman. Due to the likelihood of secondary infection which affects the child, a lot of doctors will advise against removing any warts which could form during pregnancy, aside from in situations where too much enlarged genital warts are bleeding or causing other agitation. This may be a departure from the norm for some women, however is just about the trade-offs that must be made where HPV and pregnancy are involved.

This article provides a brief overview of the most common HPV symptoms in women, as well as general information on screening and the HPV vaccine. The material presented is for feneral informational purposes only and should not be considered medical advice. If you believe you have contracted the human papillomavirus, you should contact your general physician or gynecologist and schedule an examination.
